Funding is a timing problem more often than a money problem

Most of the businesses that come to us are not in trouble. They are profitable and growing, and growth has consumed cash faster than it has produced any — materials bought, wages paid, work delivered, and then sixty days of waiting before a penny of it comes back. The bigger the contract, the bigger the outlay and the longer the wait. Win two at once and you can be more profitable than you have ever been and unable to cover your own payroll in the same month.

That gap is structural rather than a sign of anything going wrong, and it grows in proportion to turnover. Which is why the most useful conversation is nearly always earlier than people expect. A facility arranged during a calm quarter and left undrawn costs very little and removes the scenario where you turn down work you could have delivered. Arranged in the week you need it, the same facility is harder to get, slower to arrive and more expensive.

Match the product to the problem, then worry about the rate

Most of the money wasted on business finance is not wasted on a bad rate. It is wasted on the right amount borrowed through the wrong product — a short-term facility doing a long-term job, or a term loan funding a gap that comes and goes. Buying equipment points to asset finance, because it is secured on the item itself and therefore cheaper than borrowing unsecured. Waiting on customer payments points to invoice finance or a revolving facility. A one-off project with a clear payback points to a term loan. A capital project may well point to a grant alongside borrowing rather than instead of it, since most schemes are match-funded and expect you to bring part of the cost yourself.

Compare the total, not the monthly payment

The easiest number to advertise is the monthly payment, and the monthly payment is the number that flatters the longest and most expensive deal. Stretch a loan from three years to five and the monthly figure drops handsomely while the total repayable rises. Nothing about that is dishonest, and it is why so much of this market leads with it.

So ask one question of every offer: what is the total amount repayable, in pounds, over the full term — and what happens if you clear it early? Those two answers reorder most shortlists, and an early-repayment charge can quietly wipe out the saving someone thought they were getting.

One search instead of six applications

Applying to a dozen lenders in a fortnight feels efficient and is the single most common self-inflicted wound in business borrowing. Multiple hard credit searches in a short window are visible to every subsequent lender and read as distress — so a business that appears to have been turned down repeatedly becomes a worse risk than one that never applied at all.

Building one profile and matching it against the panel filters on eligibility before anything touches your credit file. Nothing is submitted to a lender until you decide to proceed. That is the whole point of doing it this way round.
